PILOTED IN 2019:

Our Summer Kindergarten Program

In 2019, we piloted a program that opened the doors of Fort Worth ISD elementary schools during the summer.

Our goal was to connect families to community resources and help incoming kindergarteners get acclimated to their school and teachers before the school year began.

The program varied in length between one week and five weeks (depending on the school), and included pre-kindergarten classes from 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. (breakfast and lunch included).

The children that participated in this summer kindergarten readiness program experienced significant improvement in their verbal, math, reading, writing, and social emotional skills based on their pre- and post-assessment results:

95%

of summer program participants maintained or improved their assessment scores

82%

improved their assessment scores from the beginning to the end of the program

58%

made gains of 30% or more in their post-assessment scores

Through these results, the Best Place for Kids! Summer Program is helping our youngest children get a strong start in school.

Outside of the classroom experience, the Summer Program hosted Family Fun Nights every Thursday, encouraging family interaction with school leaders over games, dinner, and fostering connections with 12 different local community partners, including:

  • AVANCE
  • The Concilio
  • Cook Children’s
  • FitWorth
  • Fort Worth Library
  • Fort Worth Zoo
  • Fortress Youth Development Center
  • Goodwill Digital Skills
  • NewDay Services
  • The Parenting Center
  • UNTHSC Mobile Pediatric Clinic
  • UNTHSC Mobile Vision Van
